From the recording Here Before
Luisa: Frank played the opening riff impromptu in rehearsal one day. I immediately said: “What is that?” His reply: “I just made it up.” Me: “You have to do something with that!” It took at least a year of nudging (nagging?) him to develop the musical idea more before we actually started to work on a melody and lyrics. That took a while too. One day I spontaneously sang the opening line, almost jokingly as a way of encouraging him to finish it. That set us off on the right path and the right message.
Frank: For me, this one has a sort of a Dan Fogelberg/America/Kenny Loggins early 70’s vibe to it. It’s definitely a fun one to play! Had a few of our very talented friends help us out on this recording to give it a little “extra” than when we play it out live with just one guitar.
Lyrics
(F. Veres/L. Tanno)
When will you ever turn this into something
That we can all sing about?
I find it compelling, you sitting there dwelling
But when will you figure it out?
You got something we all want, would kill for
And you’re fine keeping it down
Stuck with one foot on the ground
When you came to me for my point of view
We decided you’d find your own way
I offered assistance, encountered resistance
‘Maybe but just not today’
You got something we all want, would kill for
And you’re fine keeping it down
Stuck with one foot on the ground
Convenient though you run your show inside your head
Decide no one will get it
Once you let it out
If you wait for circumstance to be just great,
You risk the chance you’ll never leave and this is all you’ll see
It’s all you’ll see
When will you ever turn this into something?
When will you ever just give what you’ve got to give?
(Why do you hide?)
When will you ever just be who you are?
(Why do you hide?)
